On the occasion of the Cannes Film Festival, ARCOM, the new digital policeman, presented the results of the fight against sports piracy since January 2022. The institution is proud to announce that it has blocked since this beginning year no less than 400 illegal sites.
The Cannes festival has just opened its doors and on the occasion of the high mass of the 7th art, ARCOM, the new digital policeman (born from the merger between the CSA and HADOPI) presented the latest results of the fight against piracy.
Since the beginning of the year, the institution has made the fight against the piracy of sports broadcasts and cinematographic works its hobbyhorse. In April 2022, ARCOM announced that it had already blocked no less than 250 illegal IPTV sites , which represented two thirds of the illegal sports audience in France.
400 HACKER SITES BLOCKED BY ARCOM SINCE JANUARY
However, Pauline Blassel, Deputy Director General of ARCOM, has just provided the Authority's new figures. She explains in particular that between court decisions and the interventions of the digital policeman on "mirror sites", around 400 illicit sites have been blocked since January 2022. It should be remembered that the tracking of mirror sites is part of the new prerogatives of ARCOM .
In addition, she adds that no less than 1,200 additional sites, directly linked to the illegal sharing of sports content, have been closed. This reinforced fight against piracy has inevitably led to a drastic drop in illegal activities, with a notable reduction in the audiences of pirate sites.
FREE FALL IN PIRATE SITE TRAFFIC
Thus and overall, ARCOM recorded a 37% drop in illicit sports audiences between January and March 2022 . For Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, these figures are even higher, with a 76% drop in attendance between February 2021 and February 2022. We find similar results over the same period for the Champions League, with a drop by 77%.
In addition, the ARCOM specifies that the frequentation of the ten main French illegal streaming sites has been in free fall for the past few years. While these platforms represented 73% of consumption in 2017, they constituted only 34% in the 1st quarter of 2022 . Regarding illegal IPTV, the Association for the Fight against Audiovisual Piracy (ALPA) has announced that it has caused the closure of 38 services since the beginning of the year.
As a reminder, five court decisions have been pronounced in favor of major channels, such as BeIN Sports, which won the blocking of around twenty pirate sites at the end of January 2022. More recently, the LFP obtained a fine victory against the sites pirates .
