iTunes for Windows has been updated to version 12.12.4 with security fixes

Apple this week quietly released an update to the Windows version of its iTunes music player. However, instead of adding new features, the update focuses on fixing errors and security breaches for those who still rely on iTunes.

According to Apple's support web page, iTunes 12.12.4 fixes five different commands that can be used to perform random code through the music player.

One specific gap in the mobile service, which manages the connection between computers and iOS devices, allowed the app to delete files from your computer without permission. Other loopholes related to AppleGraphicsControl, ImageIO, and WebKit have been fixed.

Apple recommends windows users download the latest version of iTunes from the Microsoft Store. However, the app is still available as a separate download through the Apple website (requires Windows 8 or more recently). iTunes is required on Windows to access Apple Music offline and manage iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Of course, since iTunes has been off on macOS for years, the update is not required for Mac users.

iTunes on Windows

Although Apple Music has its own app on iOS, macOS and even Android, Windows users still rely on iTunes – which is outdated at this point and lacks some features available on other platforms.

Apple Music users on Windows computers can download some alternative programs such as Cider. However, these apps do not replace iTunes when it comes to restoring iOS devices.
